Brent Musburger has not apologized to former Miss Alabama Katherine Webb and does not agree with the decision ESPN made in issuing one to the gorgeous gal.
The 73-year-old ESPN sportscaster famously drooled over the buxom brunette during the National Championship game between Alabama and Notre Dame. Webb was watching from the stands as her boyfriend, Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron led the Crimson Tide to the BCS National Title.
“Now when you’re a quarterback at Alabama, you see that lovely lady right there…that’s A.J. McCarron’s girlfriend,” Musburger said during the telecast. “You quarterbacks, you get all the good-looking women, that’s a beautiful woman. Woah!
“If you’re a youngster at Alabama, start getting the football out and throwing it in the backyard.”
Musburger’s employer issued an apology saying “the commentary in this instance went too far.”
But Musburger told TMZ.com that he has not spoken to Webb and that he did not feel he needed to apologize.
“Individuals say what individuals say. And corporations do what corporations do. Obviously, they felt it was the right thing for them to do,” he told the gossip website.
Webb stated last week during an appearance on the “Today” show that she was flattered by the comments.
“The fact he said we were beautiful and gorgeous, I don’t see why any woman wouldn’t be flattered by that,” Webb told host Matt Lauer. “You know, I don’t think it was needed, honestly.’’
Musburger also hinted at how the next encounter between the two may go down.
“I’m sure that at some time we’ll run into each other,” Musburger said. “I’ll smile, I hope she’s still smiling and I wish her nothing but the best.”
The sportscaster denied his role in helping to jumpstart Webb’s career, but the bombshell has now been thrust into the spotlight.
So much so that she will be joining Inside Edition as a special Super Bowl correspondent.
“To be able to work alongside the team at Inside Edition to bring viewers the best coverage from the Super Bowl is an honor and a dream come true,” Webb said in a statement. “I cannot wait to give fans an insider’s look at what goes on as the teams prepare to battle and as the fans get ready to cheer on their favorites.”
