Even when the Mets win, they’re made to feel like losers.
Following Sunday’s 4-3 win over the Cubs at Citi Field, in which the Mets scored all four runs in the bottom of the ninth and celebrated at home plate after Kirk Nieuwenhuis’ three-run walk-off homer, NBC’s Bob Costas upset the Mets after this description of the highlights:
“The Mets with four in the bottom of the ninth to win it 4-3, and a team 14 games under .500 celebrates as if it just won the seventh game of the World Series,” Costas said during a sports update during the final round of the U.S. Open. “Another indication of the ongoing decline of western civilization.”
Costas called the team on Monday to apologize for the comment, but not before some players respoded to the broadcaster.
“I love Bob Costas but are we supposed to roll over and die on the season? Or should we celebrate the excitement of a huge comeback?” Mets reliever David Aardsma tweeted. “This Might be the beginning of something huge, we needed that win as a team! That’s what we were celebrating!!!!!#keepworking”
Pitcher Jeremy Hefner tweeted, “Hey Mr. Costas.. We will enjoy our wins!”
Mets strength coach Jim Malone said that Costas’ comments weren’t surprising, given his lack of experience in such on-field moments.
“I respect Bob Costas as a broadcaster, but his comments today are a classic example of a non athlete not “getting it” #allwinsarebig,” Malone tweeted
