Ask the Retailer: Sneaking a peek
Every Wednesday, retailers answer the burning questions from the front lines of the comics world. This week:
What book do you sneak a peek at as soon as it arrives?
Ted Alexander, manager, Midtown Comics’ Downtown location, 64 Fulton St., corner of Gold St., Manhattan
“As much as I dislike the idea of Doctor Octopus being in control of Spider-man’s body, I have to see what he is up to every issue of ‘Superior Spider-Man.” It’s my guilty pleasure for sure.
Ming Chen, AMC’s television show “Comic Book Men” and Jay and Silent Bob’s Secret Stash, Red Bank, N.J.
“The current book I can’t wait to get out of the box is the current run of “Hawkeye,” written by Matt Fraction and art by David Aja. The art and story speak to me for some reason. For some, this book might be a bit too hipster for them. I guess I’m a wannabe hipster.
Aimee LoSecco, assistant manager, JHU Comic Books, 32 East 32nd St., between Madison & Park, Manhattan
“‘Batwoman,’ hands down. I’m only collecting four titles in issue format (Batwoman obviously one of them) but J.H. Williams is the man, whether he’s doing double duty on writing and drawing or has Amy Reeder bringing his scripts to life. There’s never a bad team or poor work on this title. Very underrated Bat-book with a loyal following.
Gerry Gladston, co-owner, Midtown Comics, locations all over Manhattan
“Sorry, I have to mention TWO things that I have to take a sneak peek at:
“Dan Slott’s “Superior Spider-Man.” This book continues to surprise and delight with consistently clever surprises.
“Scott Snyder’s “Batman.” Scott continues to tell great Batman stories issue after issue.
“With iconic characters like Spider-Man and Batman, it’s great to read these new stories even when some folks might think, “Haven’t they already told all the great Batman and Spider-Man stories that could possibly be told?” Obviously they haven’t.”
Ron Hill, co-owner, JHU Comic Books
“My guilty lunch-time pleasure is reading regular, old superhero comics by Marvel and DC. Of late, I have been enjoying the X-Men line written by Brian Bendis. My heart and mind belongs to underground cartoonists such as Chris Ware, R. Crumb, Peter Bagge, Los Brothers Hernandez, Dan Clowes, etc. But these guys only put out a new book every few years and usually require a larger investment of time to read them.”
Jimmy C., store manager, Montasy Comics, 431 Fifth Ave., Manhattan
“‘The Walking Dead’ is hands down the favorite among the employees of Montasy Comics. It is intense and what the writers do to the characters both in their development and their demise has been surprising and enjoyable. The television series and the book diverge a bit and both can be enjoyed standalone.”
Mitch Cutler, St. Mark’s Comics, 11 St. Marks Place, Manhattan
“I always sneak a peek at a Superman book.”
Gabe Fowler, owner, Desert Island, 540 Metropolitan Ave., Brooklyn
“Almost all of them! But anything from my favorite publishers will get a closer look: Fantagraphics, Koyama Press, Nobrow, Drawn and Quarterly, PictureBox, and Le Dernier Cri are the most visually exciting publishers on Earth right now.”
