EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Who watches the Watchmen? You can – on the HUGE screen

Well, this is a first.

Watchmen has already made it to the big screen. But its prequel is gonna be on the REALLY BIG screen.

Just days before the start of San Diego Comic-Con — the Super Bowl for all things comics, summer blockbusters, video games and TV — DC Comics is launching a commercial for the prequel Before Watchmen that will run on the Jumbotron in Times Square, the first time this has been done for a comic book or graphic novel.

And here it is – the EXCLUSIVE debut at Parallel Worlds:

Last year, DC stirred up a world of controversy for publishing Before Watchmen, a group of miniseries that told the tales of the graphic novel’s characters prior to the events depicted in the classic epic by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons.

It was the first time any other comics creators touched those characters, who were also featured in director Zack Snyder’s 2009 “Watchmen” film. Some fans were enraged because the book is the closest thing that the comics world has to the Bible.

The thing is, the Before Watchmen series, crafted by some of today’s top talent, turned out to be very good – and in some cases, outstanding. Now the series are freshly out in hardcover, with two series collected in each deluxe edition.

– Before Watchmen Minutemen/Silk Spectre, by Darwyn Cooke and Amanda Conner (the best of the bunch)

– Before Watchmen Ozymandia/Curse of the Crimson Corsair, by Len Wein, Jae Lee, John Higgins and Steve Rude

– Before Watchmen Nite Owl/Dr. Manhattan by J. Michael Straczynski, Adam Hughes, Andy Kubert, Joe Kubert, Bill Sienkiewicz and Eduardo Risso

– Before Watchmen Comedian/Rorschach by Brian Azzarello, Lee Bermejo and J.G. Jones

The commercial, featuring artwork from the series, will begin airing on cable stations including IFC, TruTV and TNT this week.

And it’ll be on the Jumbotron in Times Square — fitting, given that it was the location of the original series’ climax – starting July 16.

(Oh, and if you’re headed to San Diego, you can watch it in the DC Entertainment and WB booths.)
