Costume Couture: Storm
Our Superstylist-in-Residence Caitlin Burke is back once again and this week examining everyone’s favorite mohawked superhero, Storm.
Anyway, here’s Caitlin, the New York-based fashion editor and stylist. Check her out at caitlinburkenyc.com or on Twitter, @caitlinburkenyc
Storm looks like that eccentric fashion outsider who’s simultaneously always on the inside. I imagine her palling around with the likes of Rihanna and Rita Ora during fashion week in Paris, sitting front row at shows like Givenchy and Mugler (both of whom she would be muses to), all while tweeting about the #BasicBitches sitting in the second row.
Although I don’t foresee “The Storm” becoming the next “Rachel” at your local hair salon, I think this is the type of inspiring ‘do you want to see from a fashion trailblazer. The half-shaved look has been seeing a comeback on the heels of the 90s punk resurgence, and even Nicole Richie donned a full head of white locks recently, so I think Storm is on to something here.
And while she’s ahead of the pack in the hair department, her black-and-white leather jumpsuit is pretty much dead-on with the mainstream trends right now… which I feel like she’s pretty pissed about. She’s more the alternative Tilda-Swinton-meets-Grace-Jones type. In fact, if Grace Jones had gone to the Met Ball this year, this is exactly what she would have worn.
Storm also knows what she’s doing when it comes to accentuating her curves. The strategic black paneling that creates a heart shape to emphasize her bust and minimize her waist is surely no accident. Those golden arches also do a nice job of highlighting her assets and adding a touch of glam to the ensemble — to quote the ultimate authority on golden arches: “I’m lovin’ it!”
