Pedro Alvarez will get to show off his power stroke Monday night at Citi Field after all.
The Washington Heights product and Pirates All-Star third baseman, whose 23 home runs are tied for second in the NL, was announced yesterday as a Home Run Derby replacement for Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, who withdrew after spraining his right middle finger this week.
David Wright drew the ire of Pirates announcers, fans and even a few players around baseball when he didn’t select the local product, picking childhood friend Michael Cuddyer, Bryce Harper and Gonzalez instead. Cuddyer and Harper have combined for just 28 home runs.
