Goodson does not report to Jets training camp

CORTLAND — When the Jets reported to training camp Thursday, new running back Mike Goodson was not with him.

Goodson was placed on the Reserve Did Not Report list. Goodson is still dealing with the legal situation stemming from his arrest in May on drug and weapons charges in New Jersey, but his agent Kennard McGuire said his absence is unrelated to hat.

“Mike is attending to a few personal matters,” McGuire wrote in an email. “The Jets and [general manager] John Idzik are aware and have been nothing but supportive.”

JETS TOP 25: COMPLETE COUNTDOWN

The Jets signed Goodson to a three-year, $6.9 million contract in March. He is expected to compete for major playing time.

“We knew Mike was not going to report and we understand why he’s not here,” coach Rex Ryan said in a team-issued statement.

Goodson is not the only running back who is not going to be on the field today. Fourth-year back Joe McKnight was placed on the active non-football injury list. He failed the team’s conditioning test, according to a source.

First-round pick, corberback Dee Milliner, remains unsigned, something that is not making Ryan happy.

“I’m not sure,” Ryan said about when Milliner will sign. “I’m just a little disappointed he’s not here. Again, I’ll coach the guys that are here.”

The Jets selected Milliner with the No. 9 overall pick in April’s draft. He was unable to practice all spring after shoulder surgery, meaning he needs every rep he can get. He is expected to be the starter opposite Antonio Cromartie, taking Darrelle Revis’ place.

Though Milliner did not report, his fellow first-round pick was able to make it. Defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson, taken No. 13 overall, signed his contract Thursday morning then made the trek to Cortland. Richardson signed a four-year, $10.054 million contract with an option for a fifth year, according to a source.

Richardson, a defensive lineman, said he was not nervous a deal would not get done.

“ At one point in time I was, but my agent just told ne be cool, stay confident and we’ll get it done,” Richardson said.

Santonio Holmes will begin training camp on the physically unable to perform list, but Ryan praised the work the receiver has been doing in his rehab from foot surgery.

“I’m not sure when he’s going to be cleared,” Ryan said. “I will say this — he’s been at the facilities just working his tail off. Hopefully, he’ll get cleared soon and be ready to get out there with his teammates.” … The Jets waived DE Jake McDonough and WR Thomas Mayo with injury settlements.
