The New York Film Festival will offer its opening night film as an Oscar launch pad for second year in a row with Paul Greengrass’ “Captain Phillips.” This fact-based drama stars Tom Hanks in the title role, the skipper of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama, hijacked by Somali pirates in the Indian Ocean in 2009. The Sept. 27 premiere will precede the film’s Oct. 11 theatrical opening. This is Greengrass’ first film at NYFF since the docudrama “Bloody Sunday” 11 years ago. Last year, NYFF’s gala opening was Ang Lee’s “Life of Pi,” which went on to a Best Picture and won four Oscars, including for direction. The 2010 opener. “The Social Network,” received eight Oscar nominations and won in three categories.
