Woman critical in cop crash on Upper East Side

An NYPD traffic enforcement supervisor overseeing a tow-truck and parking detail during President Obama’s visit to New York on Friday plowed into a 51 year-old woman leaving her critically injured on the Upper East Side, law enforcement sources said.

The 51-year-old pedestrian, whose name is being withheld by the Post, was struck at around 6:15 p.m. Friday on East 72nd Street and York Avenue by the supervisor, who is in his 30s as he was driving southbound.

Authorities said the woman was rushed to Cornell Hospital in critical condition with injuries to her neck and head but was later stabilized.

The officer was uninjured, according to cops.

The traffic supervisor stayed at the scene, and no criminality is suspected, police said. He was given a breathalyzer at the scene as a precaution and was cleared of any wrong-doing, cops said.

Police sources said the woman crossed against the light and the supervisor had the right of way.

The supervisor was not a part of the motorcade and was nowhere near the president at the time of the accident.

Neighbors said they’ve complained about dangerous intersections in the vicinity for years.

“For the past five years I’ve gone to community-board meetings to get signals put in on 72nd and 73rd streets,” said Arlene Kaine, who has lived in the neighborhood since 2006.

“The community is fed up with it. It’s nonstop problems. We’re extremely upset with the lack of traffic control.”

“I’ve lived here for years, and this is a bad cross-section,” added Upper East Side resident Randi Good.

“People are always jay-walking and cars are always trying to beat the light. It’s a dangerous combination.”
