With less than a month to go before its air date, NBC has released a teaser trailer for its upcoming made-for-TV production of “The Sound of Music.”
The live television event stars country star Carrie Underwood as Maria, “True Blood’s” Stephen Moyer as Captain Von Trapp and features a cast Broadway mainstays, including five-time Tony winner Audra McDonald as Mother Abbess.
While the teaser, consisting entirely of staged rehearsal footage, isn’t particularly telling, but it does feature a preview of Underwood’s take on the musical’s most iconic number, “My Favorite Things.”
Julie Andrew’s portrayal of Maria in the 1965 movie is one of musical history’s most memorable performances, and Underwood’s portrayal of the character will go a long way towards determining whether or not the production is a success. The task is definitely a challenge, but producers say that Underwood’s put in the effort.
“She’s one of those people who showed up the first day and knew every line of the script and every note of every song,” producer Craig Zadan told the Post earlier this week. “She’s an unbelievably hard worker.”
He also added that she’d even shed her trademark twang for the role.
An even more promising sign for fans is that Andrews has given the chart topper her blessing.
“I think she’s great. After 40 or 50 years it’s probably time somebody else had a crack at it,” the actress said last week.
NBC will air the “The Sound of Music, Live!” on Thursday, December 5.
