4 hilarious ‘Hunger Games’ spoofs

Tomorrow, “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” opens at long last. The second installment in the wildly popular series finds heroine Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) and hero Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson) dealing with the aftermath of having won the 74th annual Hunger Games, a bloody battle-to-the-death set in an apocalyptic future world. But the battle isn’t over for Katniss and Peeta. They’ve angered the evil overlords by inciting a rebellion, and they’re forced to fight again.

It’s a dead-serious premise, and one that’s ripe for parody. Here are four of the most amusing spoofs going viral:

The Hipster Games: Blowing Smoke

This “Funny or Die” send-up of “Catching Fire” reimagines Katniss and Peeta as millennials who train for battle by riding a unicycle and using Starbucks cups for target practice. Once the games get underway, they face extreme hardships, like a Sriracha shortage. While it’s never specified what district our hipster heroes hail from, Brooklyn seems like a safe bet.

The Hunger Games Game

The folks at collegehumor.com cast “The Hunger Games” as a girly board game, hilariously juxtaposing the movie’s bleak premise with a fun slumber party atmosphere where a gaggle of tweens play the game. A pink-pajama-clad player draws a card and reads it aloud. “The fastest way to a boy’s heart is between the third and fourth rib with a sharp arrow,” she says with cheery enthusiasm. Girly giggles ensue.

The Starving Games Trailer

Spoof-film specialists Aaron Seltzer and Jason Friedberg (“Scary Movie,” “Epic Movie”) have injected their gag humor into the franchise, creating an 83-minute spoof of “The Hunger Games” that was released last week on DVD and Blu-ray. Get a taste of the full-length “Starving Games” with this preview, which shows Katniss wielding deadly wedgies, praising Jesus and Tebowing and getting cheered on by bouncy, scantily clad cheerleaders.

Sesame Street’s The Hungry Games: Catching Fur

Katniss Everdeen is replaced by Cookieness Evereat, played by Cookie Monster, and partner Peeta Mellark is an actual piece of pita bread. To win the “Hungry Games,” they must eat foods and suss out basic patterns to determine just what foods they should eat. Num num num . . .
