Jets report card: Failing and flailing in loss to Dolphins

OFFENSE

There are not enough nasty adjectives to describe this performance. Ten total first downs, two in the first half, 177 total yards, 2-for-12 on third down — it was all terrible.

QB Geno Smith (4-for-10, 29 yards, 1 INT) could not hit an open receiver and was benched at halftime. Matt Simms (9-of-18, 79 yards, 1 INT, 1 fumble) did not give the Jets the spark the coaches hoped.

The line gave up four sacks and the wide receivers were terrible. Only David Nelson had more than one catch among the wide receivers.

DEFENSE

They made the Dolphins offense look like it was 1984 again.

Miami rolled up a season-high 453 yards on the Jets, the third-highest total the Jets have given up under Rex Ryan. The defensive backs again could not stop the passing attack, with Ryan Tannehill throwing for 331 yards and two touchdowns.

The most troubling aspect was the poor tackling. Ed Reed looks like he can’t tackle anyone and rookie Dee Milliner had a brutal day.

SPECIAL TEAMS

This group has been disappointing all season with the exception of kicker Nick Folk. That continued Sunday. Dolphins kick returner Marcus Thigpen had a 50-yard kick return and a 25-yard punt return. Return man Josh Cribbs exited the game with a shoulder injury early. Antonio Cromartie had a few near breaks returning kicks, getting one 41 yards but could not spring one.

COACHING

The season was on the line and the Jets did not show up. That falls on head coach Rex Ryan. Offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg can’t figure out how to get this offense rolling and the early-season success is a distant memory. Members of the coaching staff are fighting for their jobs. They have four weeks to try to get something out of this team.
