Mets land Granderson for 4 years, $60M

The Mets have made their biggest score of the Sandy Alderson era, signing Curtis Granderson to a four-year $60 million contract, The Post has learned.

The Mets will now have a regular outfield of three center fielders: Granderson, recent free agent sign Chris Young and Juan Lagares. Lagares probably would play center if it was decided on by defensive ability rather than experience.

But the Mets mainly got Granderson for his power bat. He was out most of last year after incurring pinkie and forearm fractures and hit just .229 with seven homers in 245 at-bats. But in 2011-12, Granderson hit a combined 84 homers, which were 10 more than anyone else in the majors.

Yes, as a lefty pull hitter playing home games at Yankee Stadium, his homer totals were a bit inflated, but Granderson has real power and could potentially be the cleanup hitter behind David Wright.

Granderson turns 33 in March, and the Mets were hoping to keep his contract to three years. But they were desperate to find power and also to be perceived as real players this offseason with money to spend. So they went to the fourth year, and Granderson becomes arguably the most significant player to go from The Bronx to Queens.
