Retired NFL punter and WFAN/FOX 5 contributor Sean Landeta talks with The Post’s Justin Terranova about the unfair treatment of Tony Romo, the Patriots without Rob Gronkowski and Rex Ryan’s future.
Q: Do you think Rex Ryan will be the Jets coach next year?
A: The team fared better than most thought they would, but I think what happens in these next two games really matters even though they can’t make the playoffs. If they play very well and win both of them, he should be back. If it turns out they play poorly, he may not be back. These last two games mean a lot to him.
Q: Do you think the Patriots are still the biggest threat to the Broncos without Gronkowski?
A: The Broncos and the Patriots are the two best teams and it’s basically a toss-up — whoever is at home would have the advantage. It’s a tribute to the Patriots organization and to Bill Belichick that they’ve been able to gather a group of players that are very underrated.
Q: Can this Ravens team still be dangerous if they make the playoffs?
A: This team is completely different and certainly not as good, but if they did make the playoffs it certainly would not surprise me one bit if they made their way back to the Super Bowl. Tremendous coach (John Harbaugh) and they still have a core of outstanding players. Not as many as they had last year, but still enough where they can make a legit run for another title.
Q: Do you think the criticism leveled at Tony Romo following last week’s brutal ending is fair?
A: Once again, Romo is going to take too much blame. Yes, he made a couple of mistakes at the end, but when you score 36 points you absolutely have to win. I believe if Romo was the quarterback in the 90’s he would have won three Super Bowls, like Troy Aikman did. We’ve all seen the stat that he’s the highest-rated quarterback in the fourth quarter among active quarterbacks (heading into the season). That’s a ridiculous statistic and the problem is certainly the team around him.
Q: Do Chip Kelly and Nick Foles have a bright future in Philadelphia?
A: This team Kelly took over was 4-12 for a reason last year. I thought improving to 8-8 would be a big jump for them and they’ve already done that with two games left. Nick Foles has done enough to show that he’s a legit starting quarterback.
