Forget once every decade. Ottis Anderson would like every Super Bowl played in wintry conditions.
The former Giants running back and Super Bowl XXV MVP is thrilled this year’s game will be played at MetLife Stadium.
“This is football at its best, baby,” the 56-year-old Floridian said with a cackle in between interviews on Radio Row at the Sheraton in Midtown. “Outdoors in [the] elements.”
Sunday’s game between the Broncos and Seahawks will be the first outdoor Super Bowl played in a cold-weather environment. Giants co-owner John Mara and Jets owner Woody Johnson suggested the area host the game once every decade, but Anderson wants to see the Super Bowl played in cold weather even more often.
“Football was made to be played outdoors,” he said. “Let the elements control the game. You don’t have the luxury of warm climate control by somebody turning the dial up or down. That’s indoor football. Out here is God-made, what God decided to do is how it’s going to be. You got to love that opportunity.
“Somebody got smart,” Anderson added, tongue in cheek, “and decided to take it inside a bubble or a dome, and enclosed it and made it more likeable for jet-setters. And the real football fan was sitting back crying and wishing for days like this here.”
Anderson, however, isn’t sure whether he will attend the game, because the Giants aren’t involved.
“It’s a little uncomfortable,” he said.
