A suicidal man threatening to leap off the George Washington Bridge caused a massive traffic backup during rush hour Friday evening as cops were forced to close lanes, authorities said.
Port Authority police responded to the New Jersey side of the bridge about 6:30 p.m. because a man was threatening to jump into the Hudson River, theys aid.
One lane was closed for the next 30 minutes while a sergeant from the PAPD’s emergency service and an officer with the NYPD each grabbed one of the suicidal man’s arm’s and yanked him off the ledge and back onto the bridge, police said.
“He was standing by a railing on the ledge, threatening to jump,” a source said of the jumper. “We had to wrestle him down to make sure he was secured and didn’t jump.”
The man, whose name was not immediately released by cops, was taken to Regional Medical Center in New Jersey for evaluation.
