Rafael Montero might get another opportunity this season to show the Mets something from the starting rotation.
The rookie right-hander earned his first major league victory on Wednesday by holding the Rockies scoreless over 5 ¹/₃ innings in the Mets’ 2-0 victory at Citi Field and is under consideration for a possible start next week, according to manager Terry Collins.
Montero was added to the rotation in order to provide extra rest for the starters, especially Zack Wheeler and Jacob deGrom.
“We aren’t sure what is going to happen,” Collins said, noting that he would like to ensure his pitchers don’t get too long a layoff between starts.
If Montero starts again, his turn would likely come Tuesday against the Marlins.
A day after getting yanked with the bases loaded in the ninth inning, Jenrry Mejia told Collins he wanted in the game. Mejia got his wish, entering for the ninth inning, and earned his 25th save with a scoreless frame.
Travis d’Arnaud batted cleanup for the second time this season, giving the Mets a righty bat in the middle of the order. D’Arnaud finished the game 0-for-4.
Matt den Dekker, who was drilled by a pitch in the left wrist on Tuesday, was still “pretty sore,” according to Collins.
David Wright and Dillon Gee visited FDNY Squad 288, HazMat 1 in Maspeth. The firehouse lost 19 members in the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center.
Rockies reliever LaTroy Hawkins, who spent last season with the Mets, remains within six appearances of 1,000 for his career.
“He was talking about retiring,” Collins said, referring to last season. “And here he is looking at 1,000 appearances with even more to come, and it’s certainly well-deserved by one of the true great guys that I’ve ever had on a team.”
