Top tech investor Peter Thiel takes ‘pot’ shot at Twitter
Why, what a way to ‘reefer’ to us!
Venture capitalist Peter Thiel took a swing at Twitter CEO Dick Costolo on Wednesday, calling the microblogging service “horribly mismanaged” and joking that pot-smoking execs might be to blame for its subpar performance.
“I think it should probably be making way more money. It feels like it’s vastly underperforming its potential,” Thiel said in an interview with CNBC.
“It’s a horribly mismanaged company — probably a lot of pot-smoking going on there,” he said.
Costolo appeared to get the joke and returned fire with his own quip about a case of marijuana-fueled munchies.
“Working my way through a giant bag of Doritos,” he tweeted on Wednesday.
Investors also seemed to take the remarks in stride. Shares of Twitter fell less than 1 percent, or 13 cents, to close at $50.70.
Facing concerns that growth is slowing, Twitter has been struggling to get its stock back up to its post-IPO high of more than $70 a share.
Thiel, a PayPal co-founder and early investor in Facebook, has been sounding off on Silicon Valley as he plugs his new book “Zero to One” about startups.
In addition to his swipe at Twitter, Thiel pointed his finger at car service startup Uber, calling it “the most ethically challenged company in Silicon Valley.”
Thiel is an investor in Lyft, an Uber competitor that has complained of sabotage tactics by Uber, including allegedly ordering thousands of rides and then canceling them.
