In the near future chewing your lunch could also charge up your cellphone. Engineers in Canada have created a chin strap that converts the energy from chewing food into electricity. Inventors at the École de Technologie Supérieure in Montreal say the device could charge batteries in hearing aids, earpieces and other small gadgets. Still in the prototype stage the strap needs to be made more efficient before it can be used to charge mobile phones and similar products. Researchers believe they can achieve this by adding layers of a "smart" material that becomes electrically charged when it is stretched. The work by mechanical engineers Dr Aidin Delnavaz and Dr Jeremie Voix appears in the Institute of Physics journal Smart Materials and Structures. A young Roma man stands next to a burning barricade during a protest in Athens on Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2014. The Greek Roma community, protesting authorities' plans to demolish their illegal settlement and move them to a remote spot in the countryside, blocked a main northern Athens avenue for hours Tuesday, using rubbish bins that they then set on fire. Eventually, a compromise was reached whereby a few uninhabited shacks will be knocked down, and the rest will stay in place pending a final agreement on relocating the Roma.
