Movie stars: We want to know them, we want to be like them — and sometimes, we want to use the same products as them.
Pete Hottelet had that idea too, which led to the inspiration for the company Omni Consumer Products, which specializes in “defictionalizing” products. He tries to make a combination of trendy shows and movies (“True Blood,” for instance) with nostalgia (“Ghostbusters”) So now even you can buy a bottle of Sex Panther cologne featured in “Anchorman.”
“You’re not actually selling cologne,” Hottelet told Fast Company, which ran a big profile on the company last month. “You’re selling the connection people have with the film.”
Here are five of the company’s most notable offerings:
Sex Panther cologne
For the lady who deserves the “special cologne,” Hottelet made a version of Brian Fontana’s (Paul Rudd) famous reserve cologne stash from “Anchorman.” The box actually growls when it’s open. While it’s not illegal in nine states, it’s unclear if 60 percent of the time, it works every time.
Fight Club soap
Hottelet worked with Fox to create this Fight Club soap in 2010 modeled on props and artwork from the movie, according to Fast Company. The product description says: “If yyou’regoing to shower, be a man about it. Introducing the only soap made with electrolytes, caffeine, and punching. Don’t waste your time with anything less.” It probably doesn’t contain human fat like in the movie, but the twist is at the end of the shower you realize you were the soap all along.
Stay-Puft marshmallows
These marshmallows are a stylized take on the famous Stay-Puft marshmallows from “Ghostbusters,” the mascot of which tried to destroy Manhattan. “We did Stay-Puft with the expectation the sequel would be a thing,” he told Fast Company. “It’s still not a thing.”
Tru Blood
With the blessing of HBO’s “True Blood,” he made this version of the vampire blood-substitute. It’s a blood-orange soda. (Get it? Blood orange?)
George Takei’s Eau My cologne
Ok, it’s not an official as-seen-on-TV product, but this it is sort of a tangible version of the catchphrase of George Takei, who played Sulu on the original “Star Trek.” The description says:
“Set Phasers to Stunning. George Takei’s Eau My is a clean, refreshing fragrance for Men and Women. Subtle and charming, with top notes of mandarin zest, Italian bergamot and fresh ozone transitioning to night-blooming jasmine, white freesia petals and grated ginger. Sensual woods, crystalized amber, soft skin musk, and vetiver will delight you when dry.”
