When we last saw Matthew McConaughey at a sporting event, he was rocking a fanny pack at a Red Sox game.
Last week, the “True Detective” star was at the University of Texas to give a motivational speech to the Longhorns football team. He challenged the players to look themselves in the mirror and ask why they wanted to be a football player.
McConaughey grew up in Texas, attended the university and is a longtime supporter of the program. And his speech did come days before Texas crushed Kansas, 23-0. Though Kansas’ ineptitude may deserve more credit than the actor.
The players asked him the favorite movie he was in and said “Mud” before bringing up last year’s hit “The Wolf of Wall Street.” In his brief role in the film, McConaughey pounds his chest while chanting during a lunch with Leonardo DiCaprio.
“Here’s how that got into the movie,” said McConaughey, who was invited to the practice by head coach Charlie Strong.
“I do that before a scene when I am nervous. I do that to loosen myself up because I am thinking too much … No. 2, I do it because other people look at me in the room and say, ‘What is he in the doing?’”
McConaughey said it was DiCaprio’s idea to include it in the film.
