St. Louis Cardinals fans have gained a reputation as one of the best crowds in all of sports. A group of those fans smeared that reputation after Monday night’s win over the Dodgers.
Some Cardinals fans leaving Busch Stadium encountered a group of protesters — speaking out against the police in Ferguson, Mo., where an officer killed unarmed teenager in August — and taunted them with an array of racist, insensitive and nonsensical comments.
One Cardinals fan taped “I am Darren Wilson” to the back of his jersey, referencing the officer who shot 18-year-old Michael Brown and has not been prosecuted, before the group turned “Let’s go Cardinals” chants into “Let’s go Darren” chants.
At one point, video shows a white Cardinals fan telling the mostly black protesters they “need to get jobs,” before addressing the camera: “If they’d be working, we wouldn’t have this problem.” Later, a woman adds, “We’re the ones who gave all y’all the freedoms that you have!”
