Showtime announced on Monday that it will produce new episodes of the groundbreaking TV show “Twin Peaks” to premiere as a limited series in 2016 — 25 years after the program last aired on ABC from 1990-91.
Original creators David Lynch and Mark Frost are onboard to write and produce all nine episodes, with Lynch directing. The new series will be set in the present day and continue the lore of the original, which delved into the mysterious secrets of a quaint Northwestern town rocked by the murder of homecoming queen Laura Palmer.
So which of the original stars could reprise their roles for the Showtime follow-up? With casting still to be announced, here’s a look at what six of “Twin Peaks’ ” more well-known stars are up to today.
Kyle MacLachlan (Special Agent Dale Cooper)
Since his breakout role on “Twin Peaks, MacLachlan has emerged as the biggest name from the cast, with co-starring roles in “Sex and the City” (as Charlotte’s sexually challenged ex-husband, Trey) and “Desperate Housewives.” More recently, he starred as a bad guy in NBC’s short-lived 2014 drama “Believe,” had guest roles on “The Good Wife” and “How I Met Your Mother,” and appears regularly on “Portlandia.”
Mädchen Amick (Shelly Johnson)
After playing a waitress secretly involved with Laura Palmer’s boyfriend on “Peaks,” Amick had steady guest work on TV series like “ER” and “Damages.” She’s currently starring as Wendy Beauchamp on the Lifetime drama “Witches of East End,” which just completed its second season.
Lara Flynn Boyle (Donna Hayward)
Boyle parlayed her stint as Laura’s best friend Donna to a starring role on ABC’s “The Practice” as Assistant District Attorney Helen Gamble from 1997 to 2003. But since then she hasn’t worked much — Boyle’s most notable recent credits are a 2008 guest spot on “Law & Order” and a recurring role on NBC’s “Las Vegas” from 2005-06.
Sherilyn Fenn (Audrey Horne)
Fenn, who played the teenage daughter of Richard Beymer’s character on “Twin Peaks,” shouldn’t be hard for Showtime to track down, should they want to recast her in the follow-up — she appeared in Season 2 of the network’s drama “Ray Donovan” as Donna Cochran, the randy wife of Hank Azaria’s LA FBI chief character.
Ray Wise (Leland Palmer)
Since playing Laura’s father — who eventually becomes the vessel for the creepy BOB — Wise has built up an extensive résumé of credits with guest roles of dozens of TV series. Most recently, he has had recurring roles on “The Young and the Restless” and “How I Met Your Mother” (as Cobie Smulders’ character’s dad) and starred in the Chipotle-produced Hulu series “Farmed and Dangerous.”
