Somebody isn’t too crazy about gourmet doughnut shop Dough Loco’s expansion plans.
A menacing note was slipped under the door of the popular snack purveyor vowing sweet revenge if they follow through with plans to open a second location on the Upper East Side.
“Mr. Cesare: Your little donut shop will never be able to compete with my Dunkin’ Donuts franchise. Do you have any idea how connected I am? Tread carefully,” the note said, misspelling co-owner Michael Cesari’s last name.
The new location is set to open on East 97th Street, about two blocks from the current site on Park Avenue.
The NYPD is investigating the hand-written threat, which Cesari said arrived on Friday at the hip bakery and was “really creepy.”
Cesari’s younger sister, Gina, tried to diffuse the situation on Monday, claiming the note is just a joke that was sent by Cesari’s friend.
“It was supposed to be a silly joke,” said the 29-year-old, who co-owns Earl’s Beer and Cheese and the new Dough Loco location with her brother.
Cesari believed the note to be an authentic threat from a businessman who owns several Dunkin’ Donut stores.
“He’s really rich and an a- -hole, so it fit in his character and I thought it was him but apparently not,” he said.
The NYPD did not comment on the sister’s claim that it was all a prank.
While the note irked Cesari, he’s been concentrating on prepping the new location for its grand opening.
The original Park Avenue location will function as a coffee house, serving up Blue Bottle brew and selling some doughnuts — but the new sweet shop will be the home front for fan favorites like Raspberry Sriracha, Double Glazed Chocolate and Miso Maple.
The bigger location features a cake doughnut machine that will add some new crazy creations and a 500-square-foot kitchen that will allow them to turn out 1,000 doughnuts daily instead of their usual 300.
“We’re hoping to meet more of the weekend demand,” Cesari said.
