Mets see an Amazin’ jump in ticket sales
Their first home game is nearly three months away, but by two measures the New York Mets are already amazin’.
Overall ticket sales for the 2015 regular season are running 19.3 percent ahead of last year — with season-ticket sales increasing 12.3 percent, according to the team.
The Mets, in fact, have already sold more season tickets for 2015 season than they did for all of 2014.
Attendance at Citi Field had fallen 32 percent since the team’s first season in the stadium in 2009.
This year could mark the first significant attendance increase over that span. Last year, ticket sales grew by just 0.6 percent — but it was pivotal because it gave the team insight into what types of marketing plans work.
Working off 2014’s success, the team now focuses it marketing efforts on two words: the weekend.
It began with “Free-Shirt Fridays,” when every attendee received a T-shirt emblazoned with a Mets theme.
It continued with “Super Saturdays,” which in addition to a game, featured fireworks and appearances by such acts as Boyz II Men and Huey Lewis and the News. (Heart and The Steve Miller Band are already signed for this season.)
And it concluded with “Family Sundays,” where kids could run the bases after the game and included family-oriented giveaways like tote bags.
This weekend emphasis is the brainchild of Mets Chief Revenue Officer Lou DePaoli.Weekend attendance jumped 3.4 percent last season. Weekday attendance continued its decline, falling 2.3 percent.
