Rats in the Big Apple prefer American cuisine, according to city data.
New York health inspectors found evidence last year of disease-riddled rodents at 1,111 locations across the five boroughs, Vocativ reports.
Data from 2014 shows that out of those restaurants, 232 served American cuisine, 153 of them were Chinese-based, 71 served Japanese and 65 were Latin. Pizza spots were also near the top of the list, with 60 different restaurants showing evidence of rats.
In the middle of the pack were Spanish and Thai restaurants, bakeries, coffee shops and delicatessens. Bringing up the rear were Kosher and Tex-Mex, which only had 8 eateries cited for rats.
When it came to fast food, the long-tailed vermin had a hankering for Dunkin Donuts and Subway, as data shows infractions at 10 locations each.
Their hoagie cravings didn’t end there — evidence of rats was also found at eight different Blimpies around the city.
Cheap-eats staple Kennedy Fried Chicken was slapped with eight violations, while Popeye’s followed with seven, according to the data.
McDonald’s and Burger King, had citations at jsut two restaurants each. Their up-and-coming rivals, Five Guys Burger and Fries, was slapped with violations at its West 48th street location.
It’s common knowledge that New Yorkers rub elbows with rats on a daily basis, but the annual release of health inspection data gives people the chance to see exactly where man and rodent break bread.
