MTA hosts best transit apps contest

Subway riders will able to look at a smart watch and see when the next train is coming, thanks to one of more than 40 new transit apps unveiled Thursday.

Straphangers can vote on their favorite apps, which are part of an MTA and AT&T competition, until Feb. 25.

The winner will get $50,000 donated by AT&T.

The apps include Pebble smartwatches such as OnTrac, which scans for nearby subway stops and shows departure times.

“Everyone who rides a subway, railroad train or bus has a stake in this and now has the chance to have input,” said MTA chairman Thomas Prendergast, who urged riders to vote. “More than 40 app developers have put in time, energy and resources toward making products they hope and expect will benefit the public.”

The Fresh Gotham app shows you bars, restaurants, and sidewalk cafes around subway stops.

Another app, called FoundIt, lets riders file a claim for an item they lost and get an alert if it’s recovered.

The developers note that more 120,000 items found by the MTA haven’t been claimed since it began releasing raw data on lost items.

Find the Line NYC gives directions-challenged riders a compass to find the way to the nearest subway station and start walking toward it.

And Departures NYC lets high-tech bus riders check out departure times.

The winners of the App Quest 3.0 contest will be announced March 19.

It is the third time the MTA and AT&T have held the contest for transit-friendly developers — but the first time smartwatch apps have been developed for MTA riders.
