Magnate who survived assassination attempt offers $100K reward for shooter

A Long Island campaign donor, who survived an assassination attempt last year, has announced a $100,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of his shooter.

Oheka Castle owner Gary Melius, 70, was shot in the head by a masked gunman who fired three rounds, missing twice, around 12:30 p.m. Feb. 24, 2014.

“There is a $100,000 reward now to get the information to solve this crime and bring to justice who is responsible,” Melius said.

The Queens-born construction magnate released his own video of the shooter fleeing on Tuesday, in hopes that it might produce some leads.

Suffolk County police have not made any arrests and have not identified a suspect. The motive is still unclear.

Melius had just sat down behind the wheel of his Mercedes last year to leave his 100,000-square-foot estate in Huntington when the assailant walked up and tried to execute him, according to police.

Oheka Castle owner Gary Melius made a video statement after his attempted murder.

Just one of the three bullets grazed Melius’ head and the gunman fled in a Jeep. The victim stumbled back to his home, where his daughter Kelly found him and rushed him to North Shore University Hospital. There, doctors found that the bullet had not penetrated his skull.

The political power-broker contributes to campaigns for both Democrats and Republicans on Long Island and lives in the second-largest private home ever built in the United States.

Oheka Castle was built in the 1920s and hosts weddings and other events.

The reward is being offered by family and friends, Melius said.
