Lacey Spears, the “mommy blogger” accused of killing her 5-year-old son by poisoning him with lethal doses of salt, won’t testify in her murder trial Wednesday — closing arguments are set for Thursday, according to a report.
Spears, from Scottsville, Ky., allegedly force-fed her son, Garnett, salt through a feeding tube in the bathroom of a Nyack hospital, where he was being treated for seizures.
The 27-year-old is charged with manslaughter and second-degree murder in Garnett’s January 2014 death at Westchester Medical Center.
Prosecutors, who rested their case Tuesday, are expected to begin summations at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, lohud. com reported.
Doctors testified that there was no medical explanation for the boy’s surge in sodium levels other than salt poisoning, the report said.
Dr. Steven Kernie, a pediatric specialist, testified Tuesday that the only way “you could really get salt into a 5-year-old kid” is “by forcing it into some kind of feeding tube,” lohud.com reported.
Dr. Aleksandar Milovanovic, Westchester County’s deputy medical examiner, determined that Garnett died of hypernatremia due to the injection of sodium and then brain swelling.
The autopsy was delayed until Jan. 25 so that Garnett’s major organs could be donated, he testified, the report said.
