New York Times closing its Home section

The New York Times is closing its Home section, the latest in a string of cost-cutting moves at the paper.

“It’s a really sad day,” said section editor Noel Millea, who will remain at the paper in a yet-to-be-determined role. “I loved the section and I had a really talented group of people.”

Several of the 10 or so Home staffers were laid off in a recent downsizing that cut 110 newsroom jobs through layoffs and voluntary buyouts. The Times’ print ad revenue fell 4.7 percent last year as readers migrate to digital outlets.

Home will end its 30-year run with next Thursday’s installment, Executive Editor Dean Baquet said in a staff email on Friday.

“I’ve concluded that coverage from the Home section would fit best in other parts of The Times, including Food and Real Estate,” he wrote.

The move is part of what Baquet called “a major overhaul of the feature sections,” including the recently shuttered Sunday Automobiles.
