MTV pioneers could be on the chopping block

Philippe Dauman doesn’t want his MTV — at least, not the current iteration.

The Viacom CEO is ready to shed a generation of execs who helped build MTV Networks into a cable powerhouse — but then presided over its ratings decline, The Post has learned.

Inside MTV’s 1515 Broadway headquarters, employees are waiting for the hammer to fall on a clutch of executives who have been with the company for decades.

“The rumors are all about positions that are under [soon-to-exit MTV Networks President] Van Toffler, or part of corporate,” said one former Viacom executive.

Executives as high-ranking as chief operating officers at corporate and in the music group are said to on the chopping block.

Meanwhile, Jeff Lucas, who runs ad sales for Viacom’s Comedy Central group, will now run a consolidated advertising sales operation across all channels except BET.

The execs said to be on the chopping block are holdovers from the days of former Viacom chief Tom Freston — who championed MTV before Dauman replaced him in 2006.

Viacom’s once wildly popular cable networks, including MTV, Nickelodeon and Comedy Central, are suffering steep ratings declines.

Dauman blames outdated measurement tools that fail to capture younger audiences’ shifting viewing habits to digital devices. Viacom is retooling to focus on mobile and paid-for apps.

But analysts say its youth-centric networks need freshening.

MTV, for instance, hasn’t had a monster hit since “Jersey Shore,” which in its heyday drew 8 million viewers.

Its latest hit, “Catfish,” captures around 1 million viewers.
