Utah tourist Brian Watkins clutched a subway cleaner’s shirt moments before collapsing and dying, the employee testified Tuesday at a hearing on overturning the conviction of one of seven men charged in the 1990 murder.
“I hear the family screaming, ‘Brian! No! No!’ He came upstairs, he grabbed me and he collapsed, and I had blood all over my shirt. I ran to the phone inside and dialed 911,” Lucius Peterson, 55, told Justice Eduardo Padro about the senseless murder that gave the city a national black eye.
Johnny Hincapie, now 45, was one of the young men convicted of murder although only Yull Morales actually stabbed Watkins.
Hincapie took the stand last week and wept as he testified that he was beaten and forced to sign a false confession.
The DA’s Office says there is “no credible newly discovered evidence” in the case.
