Gov. Andrew Cuomo sank to the lowest approval ratings of his career Wednesday, following weeks of attacks by teachers unions against his proposals to reform education.
A new Quinnipiac University poll showed the governor with a 50 percent positive rating versus 39 percent negative.
Just three months earlier — in December — Cuomo was sitting pretty with a 58 percent positive mark and only 32 percent negative. He was hammered on education policies, with only 28 percent of voters agreeing with them, while 63 percent did not.
Pollster Maurice Carroll said the numbers reflected a “rap on the knuckles” directed at the governor by the unions.
Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, compared Cuomo to Scott Walker, the Wisconsin governor and potential 2016 GOP presidential candidate who busted municipal unions in his state.
Cuomo brushed off the poll as par for the political course.
“As you’re stirring that pot and ginning up opposition and everybody is doing rallies and sending nasty emails, it’s very much the nature of the beast,” he said.
