In a shocking move, a Manhattan judge sympathized with a convicted rapist — granting his request to delay the start of his sentence in a state prison so he could marry his fiancée on Rikers Island first.
Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Maxwell Wiley sentenced Kevin Mitchell to 14 years in prison and 10 years post release supervision Wednesday for the horrifying rape of a Murray Hill woman September 29 of 2013.
Mitchell’s twisted crime didn’t stop him from convincing Tyneka Hudson who got the pairs’ marriage license just before the sentencing Wednesday.
At the defense’s request, Wiley agreed to delay Mitchell’s
transfer from Rikers Island to an upstate facility by one month so he could marry his beloved first. It’s unclear when the ceremony will take place.
Mitchell, 34, pleaded guilty to rape in the first degree in February for the sick attack in exchange for the lengthy prison term.
Mitchell admitted he followed the 30-year-old victim as she returned home, snuck into her apartment to rob her, threatened that he had a gun and would slit her throat then raped her, according to court papers.
“This lengthy prison sentence reflects the extremely violent nature of this attack, in which Kevin Mitchell raped a woman in her own home,” said District Attorney Cy Vance. “I would like to thank the survivor for coming forward, and my office’s Sex Crimes prosecutors for ensuring that this predator will serve years behind bars.”
