The new season of “Ripper Street” is off the rails — literally.
Season 3, which premieres Wednesday night (10 p.m.) on BBC America, opens with a terrifying, bloody crash as two trains collide on the newly constructed bridge above Leman Street — right in Detective Inspector Edmund Reid’s (Matthew Macfadyen) backyard.
It’s now 1894 in London’s crime-infested Whitechapel district, and four years have passed since Reid implored Sgt. Bennet Drake (Jerome Flynn) to kill nemesis Jedediah Shine, driving a wedge between the two former best friends.
As the new season opens, Drake is working as a detective inspector in Manchester, while his and Reid’s hard-drinking buddy, roustabout/doctor Homer Jackson (Adam Rothenberg), has reverted to his old besotted ways.
But everything is forgotten when a robbery is committed and the two trains collide — bringing Reid, Drake and Jackson together again for what promises to be an action-packed season.
MyAnna Buring, David Wilmot and Clive Russell co-star.
