It’s become the hottest card in town.
The city has handed out 165,399 municipal ID cards since launching the program three months ago — double expectations, officials said Friday.
With demand so high, one councilman suggested the city recover part of its $13.4 million investment this year by charging a fee of $5 or $10 for the cards.
“If something is free, everyone will come, even though there is no need,” Councilman Peter Koo (D-Queens) said at City Hall.
Mayoral aides said that’s not in the cards this year.
“I think we very much wanted this to be a card that’s an open door for everyone,” said Nisha Agarwal of the Mayor’s Office of Immigrant Affairs.
