Bryant Gumble acted like a ‘king’ at Mitre Sports trial
Bryant Gumbel got a second chance Monday in Mitre Sports’ multimillion-dollar lawsuit against HBO, but his star power in a live appearance didn’t exactly light up the jury.
A close observer of the trial — now in its fourth and most likely final week — claimed the icon of TV sports journalism displayed as much ignorance about the show bearing his name, “Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel,” as he did in a taped deposition played to the jury on April 17.
“He had this air of ‘I’m walking among kings,’ ” the observer said of Gumbel’s most recent trip to Manhattan federal court.
Indeed, an immaculately dressed Gumbel incorrectly referenced the segment called “Children of Industry,” as “Children of God” several times, which didn’t help earlier impressions that he can be clueless about segments on his own show.
In a statement after his live testimony, the affable host reiterated having great faith in his team: “I did then and I do now.”
