The city will pour nearly $80 million into science, math and computer- code training at CUNY in the next two years in hopes of creating a “talent pipeline” to supply the growing tech sector with qualified job applicants, Mayor de Blasio announced Monday.
“If we partner with you [the tech industry] properly over the next decade, a majority of tech jobs in the city will be filled by graduates of our public schools and universities,” the mayor told an audience of 400 at the annual TechCrunch Disrupt conference (pictured) in Midtown.
“These are quality jobs that you create, jobs that actually define a middle-class lifestyle, and that’s what we want for our people.”
CUNY will get $29 million for science, technology, engineering and math programs this year and more than $50 million next year.
De Blasio also noted his budget will include $70 million to fund universal broadband access citywide.
