The governor’s aide who was shot in the head at the predawn J’Ouvert celebration before the West Indian American Day Parade died Wednesday night.
Carey Gabay, 43, first deputy counsel at Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s Empire State Development agency, died at Kings County Hospital one day after his condition was downgraded.
“Our family is grieving that a man in the prime of his life who has impacted so many lives could be struck down by such a callous act,” his family said earlier in the day. “Carey embodies the American story.”
Cuomo said, “Today, the state of New York has lost one of its finest young men.”
The Harvard-educated lawyer, whose family is from the island nation of Jamaica, was caught in the crossfire of a gun battle at the annual J’Ouvert party Sept. 7.
There have been no arrests yet.
