On his way to JFK Airport on Saturday morning, Pope Francis took a poignant detour, asking the pilot of his helicopter to circle the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, portals to America for millions of immigrants.
“As we circled Ellis Island, as we circled the Statue of Liberty, I could see he was very ‘commosso,’ as they say in Italian,” meaning “moved,” said Timothy Cardinal Dolan, who was with the pope in the chopper.
“He said, ‘You know, Buenos Aires was a city of immigrants, too,’ ” added Dolan of the pope, who was raised in the Argentine capital city by Italian immigrant parents.
The pope has made immigrant rights a centerpiece of his pontificate.
