Jets report card: Vaunted defense getting ugly

Offense

The running game was absent again, as the Jets ran for just 29 yards. RB Chris Ivory (23 rushes, 26 yards, 2 TDs) could not find any room to run as the offensive line failed to open holes. QB Ryan Fitzpatrick (21 of 34, 272 yards, 2 TDs) showed grit by playing through his thumb injury and having no turnovers. WR Eric Decker (six catches 79 yards, 1 TD) had a big game.

Grade: C+

Defense

The Jaguars moved the ball way too easily through what is supposed to be an elite defense. The Jets did not miss as many tackles this week, but struggled to come up with stops. The Jaguars gashed them for 436 yards. QB Blake Bortles (24 of 40, 381 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INTs) had a big game and found receivers Allen Robinson (6 catches 121 yards) and Allen Hurns (5 catches for 122 yards, 1 TD) for some big plays. CB Antonio Cromartie had another rough day, giving up the Hurns TD before halftime.

Special teams

Kicker Nick Folk suffered a quad strain in pregame warm-ups and could not kick. Punter Ryan Quigley did a nice job filling in for Folk, making four extra points. Quigley had a mixed day punting with two short kicks, but five inside the 20. Cromartie returned kicks for the first time this season and had a 54-yard return. Punt returner Jeremy Kerley continues to make some poor decisions on fielding punts inside the 10.

Grade: B+

Coaching

Todd Bowles did a good job of getting his defense’s attention and correcting the missed tackles from last week, but the team still needs to play better. Bowles’ decision at the end of the first half to run clock instead of trying to score was a bad one that came back to bite the Jets when the Jaguars scored. Offensive coordinator Chan Gailey has to figure out a way to get the running game going.
