Umbrella-wielding protesters are expected to mass near Central Park on Sunday to show how skyscrapers will cast giant shadows across the urban oasis.
“Sunlight over Central Park is sacred,” said Warren St. John of the group Stand Against the Shadows. “We want to protect the blue sky.”
The group demands a moratorium on new buildings over 600 feet until zoning laws can be changed to limit super-tall towers along the park’s perimeter.
Six skyscrapers on 58th Street already send shadows over landmarks like Heckscher Playground, the Carousel and the Central Park Zoo, St. John said.
And the under-construction Nordstrom Tower will darken the park all the way up to the Sheep Meadow.
“This isn’t a NIMBY situation because Central Park is not my back yard, but everyone’s back yard,” St. John said.
