Most New Yorkers are having a hard time making ends meet

More than half of the people living in the city are struggling to make ends meet, according to a new poll.

The survey, conducted by Siena College and The New York Times, showed 51 percent of New Yorkers said they were either just getting by or finding it difficult to do so.

The economic stress is weighing most heavily in The Bronx and Brooklyn, where residents complain about access to jobs and education, and lack confidence in local government and law enforcement, the survey found.

Thirty-six percent of people in The Bronx said there had been a time in the past year when they didn’t even have money to buy food, the poll showed.

In Manhattan, however, 58 percent said they were doing well, while some added they were “financially thriving,” according to the survey.

On quality-of-life issues, only 19 percent of Staten Island residents said that their neighborhood has become a better place to live.

Also on Staten Island, where crime consistently is the lowest in the city, one in five report recently experiencing vandalism or theft, according to the Times.
