Married coaches axed in women’s locker room recording scandal

Towson University’s former diving coach has been charged after a smartphone was found secretly filming in the women’s locker room.

Maureen Mead, 43, whose husband, Pat, was the university’s head swim coach, was hit with peeping tom, altering evidence and interception of a communication charges, according to the Baltimore Sun.

The charges stem from an Oct. 16 incident in which members of the women’s swimming and diving team found a smartphone recording them in their private locker room.

The team watched an eight-minute video they found on the phone before going to school administrators, according to the paper.

Soon thereafter, the school opened an investigation and placed Maureen Mead on administrative leave.

The story seemed to have petered out, but a month later, the school abruptly announced that it had relieved head coach Pat Mead and assistant coach Adrienne Philips of their duties and named temporary coaches.

Facing a possible boycott by the swim team, the school also withdrew from a meet at the University of Pittsburgh which was scheduled for Nov. 20-22 so that the swimmers could “refocus, recover, and regroup and to prepare to restart the competition schedule in January.”

“The investigation continues regarding other members of the coaching staff,” the school said on Monday. “We will provide more information when it becomes available. The well-being of our student-athletes remains and will continue to be our top priority.”
