Cops this week arrested a prisoner who had escaped their custody in October, authorities said. Gerald Brooks, 39, was busted at an apartment in Jamaica, Queens, Tuesday night as he attempted to flee out a second-story window on Bedell Avenue, police sources said. Brooks escaped police custody on Oct. 20, shortly after two investigators and a sergeant from the Brooklyn South Warrant Squad cuffed him on Sheffield Avenue near New Lots Avenue in East New York at 5:30 a.m., sources said. They were picking him up on a warrant for driving without a license — but also wanted to question him about five domestic-violence incidents. Brooks has 56 prior arrests on charges such as domestic violence, assault and grand larceny, police sources said. In the October escape, as one of the officers was escorting Brooks into a police van, the prisoner shoved him and fled, police said.
Cops tracked him down based on a tip to the Crime Stoppers hot line, the sources said.
The three suspects pictured at left robbed thousands of dollars from a 7-Eleven in Sheepshead Bay, authorities said. The trio entered the store on Nostrand Avenue at about 4 a.m. on Nov. 19, with one of the thieves pointing a gun at the clerk. The employee put up his hands as the accomplices went behind the counter and stole an undetermined sum of cash from the register. They also stole cigarettes, scratch-off lottery tickets and the clerk’s wallet containing more than $3,000. The men then fled north on Nostrand Avenue.
Manhattan
Police released surveillance video of two men wanted for sticking up a cabby on the Upper East Side minutes after pulling off a robbery nearby. Footage shows the men walking with hoods pulled over their heads as they pass the taxi driver parked in his cab on East 78th Street near Madison Avenue at 4 a.m. Sunday. After the suspects walk by and notice the driver sitting alone, one begins to walk back toward the car while his partner continues on. After briefly hesitating, the thief runs up to the open car door and sticks a gun in the cabby’s face, then takes $160, cops said. The robbers are believed to be responsible for another stick-up 15 minutes prior to the taxi heist. In that incident, the duo approached a 25-year-old man on East 78th Street near First Avenue and ordered him at gunpoint to hand over valuables. The thieves made the victim lie on the sidewalk as they ran off with his backpack, cellphone, wallet and jewelry, cops said. Neither victim was harmed.
Staten Island
A female thief tried to rob two livery drivers in Port Richmond just minutes apart, authorities said. In the first incident, she was picked up by a driver on Port Richmond Avenue near Harrison Avenue at about 6:15 a.m. Friday. When her ride got to Northfield Avenue and Richmond Terrace, the woman pulled a knife and demanded cash from the 50-year-old driver. He refused but the woman managed to steal the keys from the ignition and flee on foot. About 30 minutes later, the woman hailed a driver at Grove and Sharpe avenues where she again pulled a knife and demanded money. The 51-year-old driver hopped out and got into a struggle with the thief before she slashed him on the hand and fled. She was described as in her 20s and heavy-set, cops said.
