Turmeric is trending, thanks to its many health benefits.
“It has antiviral, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties,” says Amelia Freer, author of “Cook. Nourish. Glow.” (out now, Harper Wave). “And [it]is excellent for digestive health.” But how can you incorporate the brightly colored, boldly flavored spice — best consumed as a fresh root but also beneficial in powder form — into your diet?
Curries
Turmeric is often a main ingredient. Use a packaged curry mix or paste — or just call your favorite Thai takeout joint — and grate in some extra fresh turmeric for an added healthy kick. “I love its golden color,” says Freer.
Smoothies
Amp up your morning smoothie by tossing in a small cube — about ½ inch — of fresh turmeric. It plays well with other spices you may already have in your breakfast beverage, like ginger and cinnamon.
Salad dressing
Spice up a vinaigrette with some grated fresh turmeric or a couple pinches of the ground stuff to give your veggies something special. “It goes wonderfully with carrots,” says Freer.
Soups
“It’s [also] wonderful in soups,” says Freer, who will add a whole chopped- up root when cooking winter vegetables for pureed soups.
