Michael Strahan is leaving ABC’s “Live with Kelly & Michael” to join “Good Morning America” as a co-anchor.
Strahan, who joined Kelly Ripa on “Live” in 2012, will start at “GMA” on a full-time basis in September.
Strahan, 44, has appeared on “GMA” as a special correspondent twice a week since 2014.
“I look forward to continuing to work with the incredible team at ‘GMA,’ ” Strahan said in a canned statement. “It is an exciting opportunity to be able to bring unique stories and voices to the audience.”
The former Giants star — who co-starred on the short-lived Fox sitcom “Brothers” in 2009 — joined “Live” after the show conducted a long search to replace beloved co-host Regis Philbin, who left in November 2011.
“Over the past two years on ‘GMA,’ Michael’s proven to be a tireless and versatile broadcaster with an incredible ability to connect with people, from veterans and all kinds of newsmakers to a host of modern American cultural icons,” said ABC News president James Goldston.
“He is a great modern thinker and leader, and with our brilliant team in front of and behind the cameras, he will help drive us forward into a very exciting future.”
Strahan will remain as a co-host on “NFL on Fox.”
There’s no word yet on who will replace Strahan on “Live.” As is its tradition, the show plans to kick off the search for a new co-host when its new season begins in the fall.
