Cyclist killed in Brooklyn

A cyclist was killed when he was struck by a tractor trailer Wednesday morning in Brooklyn, officials said.

James Gregg, 33, was riding his bike alongside the truck down Sixth Avenue near Sterling Place in Park Slope when he was hit and fell under one of its giant rear wheels at around 8 a.m.

EMS workers pronounced the man dead and the driver of the truck remained at the scene. He lived just blocks from where he was killed.

The collision happened in front of several kids as they were walking to nearby P.S. 282, about two blocks from the accident scene.

“It was the time when school kids walked to school,” said Gregory Graham, 61.

“One little girl saw it and she said that the guy on the bike lost his balance and fell underneath the truck. They were covering him with a white sheet when I got here,” he said.

A worker at the school said staff had to direct the children away from the body.

Another local resident said the neighborhood’s streets were dangerous for cyclists because they are not equipped to handle such large vehicles.

“These streets are not built for trucks this size — they’re 18 wheelers,” said Carol Gould. “Sometimes it looks like the New Jersey Turnpike. This is not OK.”
