Historic Upper West Side penthouse sells for $20M

An Upper West Side penthouse once owned by William Randolph Hearst has sold for $20 million, according to city property records.

The price is almost half what the seller, financier/art collector/philanthropist Benedict Silverman, originally asked for when the unit hit the market in 2014 for $38 million.

The 7,000 square foot, seven bedroom triplex, at 137 Riverside Drive, was last asking $24 million with Corcoran brokers Joy Handler and Fabienne Lecole. It comes with 10,000 square feet of outdoor terraces boasting views of the Hudson River.

The private elevator landing opens to a formal entrance hall with a dramatic staircase and a Tiffany chandelier. Details include floors inlaid with marquetry designs, 17 foot ceilings, curved windows and an Art Nouveau mantelpiece. There’s also an eat-in chefs kitchen that opens onto one of the terraces for al fresco dining and a wood paneled library. The top floor features a class-enclosed solarium overlooking the Hudson, with a 2000 square foot deck. Hearst once owned the entire building.
