Port Authority exit is the latest blow for Cuomo

Port Authority Vice Chairman Scott Rechler plans to leave the embattled agency within months despite Gov. Cuomo’s strong objections, sources told The Post.

Cuomo appointed Rechler, a bulwark of New York’s side at the bistate PA, to the agency in 2011. He became vice chairman in 2012. Cuomo desperately wanted Rechler to stay, but an insider said Rechler’s PA role “was like walking into a churning whirlpool every day and he didn’t want to get sucked down like others have.”

Well-respected Rechler’s exit will leave the PA more adrift than ever and weaken Cuomo’s hand over the New Jersey side, led by Chairman John Degnan.

Executive Director Patrick Foye, who represents New York, announced his resignation in November. He’s grudgingly stayed on until a new chief executive position is filled — which the PA has failed to do so far.

Rechler has been tapped to become chairman of the Regional Plan Association, a nonprofit that advocates for infrastructure and transportation improvements in the metro area. Sources said both Rechler’s PA exit and his RPA move are fait acompli, although the parties fudged the issue.

“I wouldn’t say I’m leaving now. I’m coming up on my five-year anniversary at the Port and I thought it was time to start thinking about a transition,” Rechler told The Post on Friday.

RPA rep Wendy Pollack said the “search process hasn’t concluded but we expect it will be concluded soon,” and Rechler denied to us that he’d been offered the RPA position. But on Friday the RPA executive committee voted to endorse Rechler’s hiring.

The departure of Rechler, chairman and CEO of real estate development and management company RXR, comes as the PA is besieged on all fronts. It’s under fire over huge World Trade Center cost overruns and struggling to recover from the Bridgegate scandal, which led to the ouster of former Chairman David Samson.

Open warfare between the states broke out at a public board meeting last winter when Degnan got into a shouting match with Foye and two New York commissioners over plans for a new Manhattan bus terminal.
